"Obtained at Washington, D. C. in May and June, 1885, of N. J. Smith (Tsá-la-tiʹ -hi or Charles-killer), the principal chief of the eastern Cherokees, composed mainly of old âʹ -tă-lu Tsăʹ -lă-kiʹ or [?] Upper Cherokees . . . ." Mooneyʹs signature is dated "July 9, 1885."
