Biographical / Historical
Frits Holm, a Danish explorer, undertook an expedition into the the interior of North China in 1907 to obtain a monolith replica of the Nestorian stele, dating from A.D. 781, in Sian-fu in Shensi province. The Nestorian tablet is evidence of the early presence of Christian missionaries in China and the acceptance of the religion by rulers of the Tang dynasty. The replica is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
