Biographical / Historical
Roy A. Rappaport (1926-1997) was a cultural and ecological anthropologist whose work involved the study of ritual. He received his PhD from Columbia University and joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1965.
Tom Fricke (1954-) is a cultural anthropologist and faculty at the University of Michigan.
After Rappaport was diagnosed with cancer in 1996, Fricke spent many days at Rappaport's home and recorded the conversations that they had, often leading them with questions about Rappaport's life and anthropology.The recordings were later transcribed by Fricke's student, Brian A. Hoey.
