Ankopaingyadete, also known as Anko, was a Kiowa warrior who kept a seasonal and monthly calendar that covered the years from 1864 to 1892. Originally written in a notebook, he copied the calendar onto hide at the request of Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) ethnologist James Mooney. Anko's original notebook is in the collections of the National Anthropological Archives. His original hide painting went missing after it was sent to be photographed for the BAE annual report circa 1895.
Charles E. Rowell (1909-2004) was a Kiowa artist from Oklahoma, who claimed kinship with Anko. In the 1960s, he painted several calendars based on Anko's painted hide calendar, one of which is in the anthropology collections of the National Museum of Natural History. He also conducted research into and wrote up interpretations of the drawings in Anko's Calendar.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The documents were donated along with Charles Rowell's painted hide based on Anko's Calendar by Lisa Henley to the Department of Anthropology Collections, National Museum of Natural History, in 2015. The documents were separated and transferred to the National Anthropological Archives.
Custodial History
The calendar was purchased by Dr. Thomas H. and B. Glorine Henley from Charles Rowell in the late 1960s.
Separated Materials
The collection came to the Smithsonian along with Charles Rowell's hide-painted calendar based on Anko's calendar, which now forms Accession No. 2071188 in the anthropology collections of the National Museum of Natural History.
