The drawing shows a pyramid temple known as the "House of the Magician" or "House of the Dwarf," in the ruined city of Uxmal, Yucatan. According to earlier cataloging, Alfred Marston Tozzer (letter of April 25, 1941--not examined) described the drawing as depicting the "eastern facade of the upper two buildings of the House of the Magician. The doorway with its corner masks, without the back of the upper building, was published in the folio edition of Catherwood's drawings, London, 1844, the title of which is, "Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan."

Custodial History
Custodial History
The drawing came into the hands of the father of Clarence King, the geologist, who had furnished money for the expedition. It was presented to W. H. Phillips, of Washington, by Clarence King around 1890. After Mr. Phillips' death, it became the property of Imogene Phillips, who sold it to the Smithsonian for fifty dollars on June 28, 1901. It was purchased from the Secretary's Reserve from the budget of the Bureau of American Ethnology. The drawing has been a part of the anthropology collection since then. It was transferred from the artifactual collections to the National Anthropological Archives in 1988.
