Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
This is the only Manuscript in the files that could conceivably be the Tehuelche vocabulary that J. B. Hatcher collected in Patagonia, 1898. However, it is not in a printed "Schedule" and Hatcher, in his letter of November 5, 1897 to McGee, acknowledges receipt of "blank book for work on Philology among Indians." I would expect this to refer to one of Powell's printed schedules, not an ordinary notebook. A less concrete reason for doubting that these are Hatcher vocabularies is that the notebooks and the handwriting appear to be "earlier" than Hatcher's time. The handwriting is not Hatcher's and it seems unlikely that his vocabularies would have been transcribed in a hand like this. MCB, 3/60.
