Custodial History
History Of Accession: Extract from letter from James G. Gauntt to J. Walter Fewkes, dated December 2, 1930: "Enclosed you will find a photostatic copy of a negative from the original copy of the treaty set forth, which I now have in my possession. "This old paper of the Creek Indians, (with other information) has come to me through a cousin who is of the fourth generation of the DuBois family, as below set out. "DuBois married a princess of the Tukabahchee tribe prior to the treaty of 1832. He was an ambassador from the French Government to the Creek Nation of Indians. "He was educated as a lawyer, and was a legal representative of the Creeks and went to Washington with the delegation to form the treaty of 1832. This old paper went to Muskogee, Indian Territory and has been stored away these many years and has recently come to light." --"P.S. I would be glad to have any remarks that you might care to make as to who wrote this copy etc." -This is evidently a copy prepared for the Creeks. There are no autographs; all signatures are in the hand of the clerk who made the copy. [MCB:11/53]
