Robert Ormsby Sweeny, druggist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1831; died in Duluth, September 6, 1902. He settled in St Paul in 1852; designed the great seal of the state of Minnesota in 1858; was the first fish commissioner of this state; later removed to Duluth, where for a time he was in charge of the U. S. fish hatchery. This information is from Warren Upham and Rose Barteau Dunlap, "Minnesota Biographies, 1655-1912," Minnesota Hist. Soc. Collns., Volume XIV, St Paul, 1912, page 761. They give their source as follows: 68. History of Ramsey County and City of St Paul, 650 pages, 1881. 94. Pen Pictures of St Paul, and Biographical Sketches, by T. M. Newson, 746 pages, 1886. 237. Purchased 1957 from the Minnesota Historical Society, St Paul 1, Minnesota, for reference only. Publication permission as well as additional prints should be obtained directly from the Minnesota Historical Society, which owns these and other originals of drawings of Indians by Sweeny, totaling about 60.
