Scope and Contents
It appears from the typescript that only one page of it is actually a translation or explanation of the scroll; the other pages are apparently a translation by Lufkins of an account by Day Dodge of the origin of the medicine lodge.

Custodial History
According to the letter of transmittal from Warren K. Moorehead, (Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, April 6, 1910) to F.W. Hodge, the typescript is a copy of part of a translation by John Lufkins, a half-blood Ojibwa graduate of Carlisle School, of a birch-bark record given to Moorehead by Day Dodge, the only surviving medicine man of the Otter Tail band of Ojibwas. Moorehead expected to receive a further translation of "the real secrets" which he promised to send to Hodge and which were not to be published until after the death of Day Dodge, then aged 82.
