The collection consists of two (2) examples of a design that was used as a colophon on the title page of the Bureau of [American] Ethnology Annual Reports (beginning 1881) and Bulletins (beginning 1887). The design depicts a rain symbol in sky, a cliff dwelling and pictographs on a cliff. One example is signed "Lorenzo J. Hatch Sc / 1896." The other example is signed "H. H. Nichols Sc."

Biographical Note

Biographical Note
Henry Hobart Nichols [Sr.] (1838-1887) was an engraver and illustrator. He is presumed to be responsible for the majority of the Bureau's early engravings, if only as a supervisor to other engravers.
Biographical Note
Lorenzo James Hatch (1856-1914) was an artist best known for his work as a portrait engraver in Washington, D.C. and New York. He worked for the United States Bureau of Printing and Engraving, private bank note printers, and in China, assisting the government with establishing a government bureau of printing and engraving.
