Scope and Contents
The 3 page manuscript catalogued as Bureau of American Ethnology Number 4 is a copy, with the Pequot words in two columns, headed, "My scientific transliterat'n" & "Rowell's own orthography." Although this copy is in a neat Spencerian script not resembling Henshaw's and probably that of a clerk, the author of the "scientific transliterat'n" was probably Henshaw, since the letter was referred to him for reply. Local Note

Local Note
An unsuccessful search was made in the Smithsonian Institution-Bureau of American Ethnology correspondence files on November 25, 1958 for the original letter of J. Fred Rowell, Stamford, Connecticut, August 22, 1891. However, a copy of the Director's reply was located in the letter book of the Bureau of American Ethnology (marked "S" on cover) for March 28, 1891-June 22, 1892, pages 158 and 160. These show that the original letter was Number 194 for 1891 and was referred to H. W. Henshaw for reply.
