Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
The annotations, which appear as interlineations and marginalia and on blank pages such as flyleaves and the backs of printed pages, are largely additions to, elaboration of and further classification of Spencerʹs catalog of the peoples of the South Pacific, Africa, Asia, and America. Linguistic and physical characteristics, especially as related to origins and ethnic differences, are emphasized in the notes more than are customs and subsistence. In addition to his own observations, Niblack relied heavily upon, and cited, published works of many contemporary scholars for his data and discussions.
