Description and translations furnished by Chang-su Houchins, of the Smithsonian Department of Anthropology, who states: "Data and printer's name from the legend which reads Empō ku kano-to tgori shōgatsu kitsujitsu hanjo Hayashi [no uji] Yoshinaga (Printed by Hayashi Yoshinaga on an auspicious day of the first month of the year of the cock, 1681).

Custodial History
The maps was collected in Japan during the 1930s. It was included in the exhibition "Around the World," held at the Historical Warner House, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, July 31-August 5, 1939. The map was donated to the Smithsonian Institution by Mrs. Lispernard S. Crocker in 1961. It was transferred from the artifactual collection of the Department of Anthropology to the National Anthropological Archives by Chang-su Houchins in January 1986.
