The collection consists of eighteen (18) watercolor drawings of men and women in traditional dress. The drawings were collected by Rockhill in Korea circa 1887.

William Woodville Rockhill (1854-1914) was an American diplomat and a leading scholar in Chinese and Tibetan studies. From December 1886 to April 1887 he served as Chargé de Affaires in Korea.

Gift to the Smithsonian by William Woodville Rockhill, 1890. Transferred from the object collections of the Department of Anthropology to the National Anthropological Archives by Chang-su Houchins, June 1983.
