Scope and Contents
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of three (3) drawings of Bodhidharma (Daruma) made in the suiboku-ga style. Included are side and full view bust portraits executed in accordance with a standard type of Daruma--"three-quarter view of the head and shoulders with the furrowed brow, the eyeballs rolled in one direction, the mouth turned downward to emphasize the vigor of concentration."
Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. The information within this collection does not reflect the views of the Smithsonian Institution or National Anthropological Archives, but is available in its original form to facilitate research.
Historical Note
Historical Note
Bodhidharma (Daruma in Japanese) was a legendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century and played an important role in the transmission of Zen Buddhism from India to China.

Custodial History
The drawings and other objects were donated to the Museum of Natural History in 1972 by Dr. Ashley B. Gurney. The drawings were transferred from the object collections of the Department of Anthropology to the National Anthropological Archives by Chang-su Houchins, August 1983.
