Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
The collection consists of 42 cards collected by Yoshio Noma. The cards include the names of individual or group visitors or shop signs, along with place names (cities and districts).
Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. The information within this collection does not reflect the views of the Smithsonian Institution or National Anthropological Archives, but is available in its original form to facilitate research.

Historical Note

Historical Note
Senjafuda are votive slips, stickers, or placards which bear the name of the worshipper and are posted on the gates or buildings of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. They were originally made by pilgrims to paste on the walls of temples and shrines as a sort of devotional graffiti. Later they became collector's items.

Administration

Custodial History

The collection was transferred from the object collections of the Department of Anthropology to the National Anthropological Archives by Chang-su Houchins in August 1983.
