Maps shows a full view of the Bay of Hakodate with various types of watercraft. Multicolor codes identify streets, schools, hospital, temples, and other public buildings. Included are foreign settlement areas, foreigners' cemetery, and scenic places. Additional identifications are given with notes in anonymous hand. List of street names in six groups forms part of the legend.

Collected in Japan during the 1930s. Included in an exhibit "Around the World" held at the Historic Warner House, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, July 31, August 5, 1939. Donated to the Smithsonian by Mrs. Lispernard S. Crocker in 1961. Transferred to the archives by Chang-su Houchins, May 1986.
