Scope and Contents
The collection consists of three (3) paintings on thin paper collected by Claude Herman Barlow in Huzhou, China in 1909. The paintings depict mythological figures, including a dragon, a fish, and a man, and are signed by the artist, Xu Hui Qin. Each painting has been marked in pencil with an explanation in English of the figure.

As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. The collection was donated to the United States National Museum by Dr. Claude Herman Barlow on December 13, 1909. It was transferred from the object collections of the Department of Anthropology to the National Anthropological Archives in August 1986.
