Biographical / Historical

Biographical / Historical
Kay Tuwalstewa Johnson was a One Horn Society leader at Old Oraibi. Formerly an adherent to Hopi religion, an injury and his delay in recovery caused him to identify the Hopi deity Massa as the devil and brought his conversion to Christianity. The tapes were made in the late 1960s or early 1970s with his son, Fricso H. Johnson running the recorder.

Administration

Custodial History
The tapes were deposited by Philip C. Johnson in 1979. Johnson obtained the materials from his father, Frisco H. Johnson, who had himself encoueaged his own father, K.T. Johnson, to make the recordings. Philip Johnson has allowed the archives to make copies of the tapes but, in accordance with his grandfather's wishes, has imposed the restriction that no profit be made off of them. Dr. David Shaul has listened to the tapes and states that K.T. Johnson was careful to omit any tribal secrets that he knew.
