Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
Foolscap page has drawings in ink and notes in Loewʹs hand which do not include the locality. A partly illegible note in A. S. Gatschetʹs hand refers to "Benton" and "Black Lake." In a letter to Garrick Mallery (Manuscript file No. 2372, box 9) dated Munich, May 13, 1887, Loew writes: "The most interesting inscription I met was that of Benton in Eastern California, published in the Annual Report of the Wheeler Survey for 1876, page 327." On the small page, the sketches are in pencil with color notes and the legend, "figures in sandstone caves on Motars (?) ranch near old Fort Tejon." It is apparent that the small page was originally pasted to the larger.
