Mr Gatschet states: "This dialect was spoken by a tribe he (Mr Burton) could not remember. These Indians then lived fifty miles south of the grand lagoon or Clear Lake, but no Indians live there now, not even in the neighborhood, for the whole section has been taken up by wheat-growing farmers. The dialect was understood also by the Indians on the shores of Clear Lake and in Napa Valley. The Indians speaking our (?) dialect had a very dark complexion. The words are put down inFrenchorthography, and their transcription into the scientific alphabet presents no difficulty. "This dialect diverges considerably from the Yuki dialects printed in Contributions, Volume III, page 484, etc., excepting the dialect Number 4, whose vocabulary was taken by Mr J. R. Bartlett, near Knight's Farm."-- From Gatschet's copy from Burton's original in January, 1878.
