Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
James Owen Dorsey (1848-1895) was an ethnologist and linguist employed by the Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE). Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Dorsey was ordained by the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1871 and began missionary work among the Ponca Tribe shortly thereafter. Though he was quick to learn the Ponca language, illness forced him to abandon his work in 1873. He returned to Baltimore and became a staff member of the BAE after its establishment in 1879. With the BAE, he completed studies on the Omaha, Osage, Kansa, and Dakota Tribes, as well as on Athapascan, Kusan, Takilman, and Yakonan languages in Oregon.
