Biographical/Historical note

Biographical/Historical note
Father Theodorus L. Verhoeven (1907-1990) was a Dutch Catholic priest, member of the international order of SVD (Societas Verbi Divini) missionaries, and amateur archeologist. He studied archeology at the University of Utrecht and spent several months in Italy researching at Pompeii, Herculaneum and Ostia Tiberia. After receiving his doctorate in 1948, he traveled to Flores, Indonesia, to do missionary work. During nearly two decades on the island, Verhoeven conducted numerous excavations as well as anthropological fieldwork with a team that mostly consisted of his seminary students. Verhoeven was among the first to report on stone tools found with Stegodon remains in central Flores in 1957 and 1965.
