Japanese cartes de visite depicting people, villages, cities, and dwellings. Many of the prints are hand colored and some of them are stamped "M. Gillet Gill," possibly a reference to Martin Gillett Gill, a tea merchant in Baltimore in 1880. He may have originally purchased or collected the cartes de visite.

Rosanna Alexander Blake (1912-1987) was a lawyer and collector of Confederate historical materials. Blake taught history and government at Lees-McRae College in North Carolina before becoming an attorney, first in Kentucky and then for various federal agencies. Blake bequeathed her entire collection to Marshall University in West Virginia, her undergraduate alma mater.
