Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
Peter Goddard Gates (1855-1925) retired from a career in the lumber industry in 1900 and devoted much of his time afterward to philanthropy and archaeology. In about 1900 Gates proposed to fund a joint archaeological expedition with the Smithsonian to the southwest in the summer of 1901 with the provision that the material collected would be divided equally between the Smithsonian's National Museum and himself. Walter Hough, ethnologist in the Department of Anthropology of the National Museum, led the 1901 expedition and preceded Gates to the southwest to collect for the museum prior to the official expedition.
