Photographs relating to archeological excavations at sites on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation, including Warren Caldwell's work at the Black Partizan site and Hubert Smith's work at another historic site. The collection includes images of the excavations and their surroundings; artifacts and remains in situ and after excavation; a rodeo in Pierre, South Dakota; and cities in South Dakota and Nebraska. The collection also includes correspondence from James B. Richardson to his parents, describing the excavations and camp life.

James Bushnell Richardson (b. 1936) was a crew member on the excavations of sites on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation in South Dakota in 1957. He received a BA from Saint Lawrence University (1960), MA from Syracuse University (1963), and PhD fro the University of Illinois (1969). After his appointment as Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1967, he was promoted to Professor of Anthropology and eventually Chair of the Anthropology Department. In 1980, Richardson became Chief Curator for the Section of Anthropology at the university's Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
