A group portrait of men and women who attended the second General Assembly of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History. The portrait was made on the steps of the Pan-American Union building in Washington, DC, in October 1935.

Biographical/Historical note
The Pan American Institute of Geography and History was founded by a resolution of the Sixth International Conference of American States at Havana in 1928. Based in Mexico City, it held its first general assembly in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1932. The United States joined the institute through a Congressional resolution in August 1935. The second general assembly was held October 14-19, 1935, in the Pan-American Union building in Washington, DC.

Sent to Dr. Matthew W. Stirling by the Pan American Union. A second print, possibly given to or collected by Neil Judd, was transferred from the Department of Anthropology in 1973.
