Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden (1829-1887) was a physician and geologist best known for his expeditions and geological surveys of the late 19th century. After the American Civil War, Hayden joined the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories (now the US Geological Surveys) and led the first congressionally-authorized explorations into the geology of the western territories. After receiving appropriations in 1867-1869 for exploration in Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado, Hayden presented a plan to Congress that outlined geological and geographical exploration and the creation of territorial maps. In 1871, Hayden led a geological survey into the Yellowstone area, during which photographer William Henry Jackson and painter Thomas Moran produced landscape artwork. As the geologist-in-charge of the USGS, Hayden was accompanied by his assistants, Jackson, William Henry Holmes, George Benjamin Chittenden, and Story B. Ladd.
