Scope and Contents note

Scope and Contents note
Photographs depicting artifacts collected and peoples encountered during the Wilkes Expedition, also known as the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. They include images of clubs, axes, spears, sennit rolls, paddles and canoes, a drum, clothing, and people from Fiji, Hawaii, the Marquesas Islands, New Caledonia, New Guinea, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands. Many of the photographs are notated with the artifacts' probable origins. The photographs were possibly made by the Department of Anthropology, and John William Lindt, with some collected by Gustavus Goward.

Biographical/Historical note

Biographical/Historical note
The second USS Albatross, a United States Fish Commission steamer, embarked on expeditions in the South and Central Pacific in the 1880s and 1890s. On one of these expeditions, the Smithsonianʹs Department of Anthropology sent photographs of material in its Oceanic collection for additional information gathering, probably including the photographs in this collection.
