Biographical/Historical note
Oxford University's Diploma in Anthropology was introduced in 1906. Wilson Dallam Wallis and Charles Marius Barbeau were Rhodes Scholars who graduated with diplomas in 1910. Diamond Jenness attended Oxford on a Balliol scholarship and received his diploma in 1911. Balfour, Thomson, and Marett were the three most influential dons in the early period of the Anthropology Diploma. Balfour served as curator of the Pitt Rivers Museum at Oxford, Thomson lectured on human anatomy and physical anthropology, and Marett served as Secretary of the Committee of Anthropology.
