Photographs documenting Henri Begouen's excavations of caves, mostly on his property in France. There are images of Paleolithic paintings, carvings, and sculpture in caves in France, including Cave du Tuc d'Audobert, Cave de Montespan, Cave de Niaux, and Cave des Trois Freres. One image depicts an excavation party, including Henri Breuil, Comte Begouen and sons, and Comte Cartailhac.

Comte Henri Begouen (1863-1956) was a Professor of Prehistory at the University of Toulouse. In addition to excavation of caves on his property, he also participated in an excavation with James Townsend Russell in 1931.

Custodial History note
The photographs were purchased from Count Henri Begouen at the University of Toulouse by James Townsend Russell with money from the Old World Archeology Fund in 1932 (accession 121411). One photograph was transferred to the National Anthropological Archives from the Anthropology Processing Lab in 1975. The rest were found in the files in the office of Gus Van Beek, an anthropologist at the Smithsonian, and transferred to the National Anthropological Archives, 1979.

Additional photographs by Begouen, which were previously filed in Photo Lot 79-38, have been relocated and merged with Photo Lot 76-78. These photographs were also purchased as part of accession 121411 and form part of this collection.
