Biographical/Historical note
Winold Reiss (1886-1953) was a German-born American artist who specialized in portraits of American Indians. After attending art school in Munich, he immigrated to the United States in 1915 and began drawing pastel portraits of members of the Blackfoot tribes. In addition, Reiss drew portraits of workers and revolutionaries in Mexico as well as residents of Harlem in New York City. Reiss was also commissioned to draw portraits of American Indians for Great Northern Railway calendars.
