Biographical/Historical note
Usher L. Burdick (1879-1960) was a lawyer, North Dakota Lieutenant Governor (1911-1913), and United States Representative (1935-1945). Growing up near the Fort Totten Sioux Indian reservation, he learned to speak the tribe's dialect fluently as well as some other Native American languages. He also wrote a number of books, including The Last Battle of the Sioux Nation (1929) and Tragedy in the Great Sioux Camp (1936).
