Biographical/Historical note
Carobeth Laird (1895-1983) was the wife of ethnologist and linguist John Peabody Harrington when she met George Laird on the Colorado River Reservation in 1919. George Laird served as the source and inspiration for two of Carobeth Laird's books: The Chemehuevis, published in 1976; and Mirror and Pattern: George Laird's World of Chemehuevi Mythology, published in 1984. She married Laird after her divorce from Harrington in 1921. George Laird died in 1940.
