Much of the collection consists of photographs depicting structures at Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Also included are photographs of T. Dale Stewart and his family, excavations, and modern buildings. There are also lists of captions for a 1949 trip to Peru, though the photographs are not included in the collection.

Biographical/Historical note
In 1947, Smithsonian physical anthropologist T. Dale Stewart began a program of cooperation with anthropologists of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and scientists in Guatemala. In part, the project was designed to promote relations between scientists of the Americas and was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Stewartʹs activities involved a study of the highland and lowland Mayans and the study of remains at highland archeological sites.
