Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
The Southeastern Archaeological Conference (SEAC) was founded in the 1930s due to the increase in federally-funded archaeological work in the region during that time. They held their first meeting in May 1938 and started a newsletter of papers and research notes in 1939. John Canfield Ewers, also depicted in the portrait, was the acting superintendent of the Ocmulgee National Monument at the time. Ewers was appointed Associate Curator of the Division of Ethnology in the Department of Anthropology of the United States National Museum in 1945, and later served as director for the museum.
