Photographs relating to the Japanese Red Cross Society (Nihon Sekijūjisha) of Tokyo, Japan, used in an exhibit at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904. It includes images of the Hakuai Maru, a Red Cross Hospital ship; Japanese Red Cross Society relief staff aboard the ship; the Tokyo headquarters of the Red Cross Society; two nurses with hospital equipment; and a ceremony in front of the Japanese Red Cross Society Hospital. Photographs of relief staff and nurses were possibly made to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the society's founding.

The Yegi-Honten Studio was Yegi M.'s main studio, based in Awajicho, Kanda district. The studio was responsible for some of Japan's exhibit photographs at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904).
The Japanese Red Cross Society was founded by Count Tsunetami Sano in 1877. Originally known as Hakuaisha, it was intended to provide relief aid during the Satsuma Rebellion of that year. The organization provided medical supplies, rescue measures, and social work services. It was renamed the Japanese Red Cross Society in 1887.

Custodial History note
The photographs were exhibited at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Missouri, 1904. They were part of the donation presented by the Imperial Japanese Commission to the United States at the close of the exposition in 1905 (accession 44415). The photographs were transferred to the archives by Chang-su Houchins in April 1986.
