Images of burials and pits at the Townsend Site excavation. The photographs were probably made by T. Dale Stewart, but possibly made by Henri Geiger Omwake, one of the local archeologists heading the project.

Biographical/Historical note
Thomas Dale Stewart (1901-1997) was a physical anthropologist who focused on diagnostic characteristics of human skeletons. He began his career in the Division of Physical Anthropology of the United States National Museum as an aide to Ales Hrdlicka in 1927. He advanced to Curator of the Division in 1942 and to Head Curator of the Department of Anthropology in 1961. Stewart provided general supervision and advice for the Townsend Site excavations (circa 1948-1949) which were conducted by the Sussex (Delaware) Society of Archeology and History.
