Biographical/Historical note
Julia Pavlovna Petrova-Averkieva (1907-1980) was a Soviet anthropologist and student of Franz Boas. She became director of North American Studies at the Institute of Ethnography in Moscow and compiled "the most comprehensive Native American string figure collection ever assembled from a single tribe" in her book, Kwakiutl String Figures.
