Biographical/Historical note

Biographical/Historical note
John George Verkamp (circa 1877-1944) moved from Ohio to the developing South Rim of the Grand Canyon in 1898, where he began selling Native American crafts out of a tent at the head of the Bright Angel Trail. At the end of the summer he sold his inventory to a hotel operator and returned to Flagstaff. In 1905, he and his wife Catherine returned to the South Rim and began the construction of their new store, Verkamp's Curios. They opened for business on January 31, 1906, and built a successful business which employed Native American craftsmen.
