Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
Ralph Russell Doubleday (1881-1958), nicknamed the "rodeo postcard king," was a freelance rodeo photographer. He was probably born Edward Cochran in Jackson County, Iowa, though he was known as Doubleday as early as 1910. He made his first professional mark at the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo on August 27, 1910, when he captured an action shot of Gus Nylen being thrown from a bucking horse. Doubleday published postcards using the "D.F.P.Co.Inc." (Doubleday-Foster Photo Co. Inc. of Miles City, Montana) copyright notice on all of his photographic postcards; this copyright was later shortened to "R.R. Doubleday," and later simply "Doubleday."
