Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
The International Congress of Americanists, an outgrowth of the Societe Americaine de France, was organized in Paris in 1874. Its purpose was "to contribute to the progress of ethnographic, linguistic and historic studies relative to North and South America, especially for the period before Christopher Columbus, and to report to those who are interested in these studies." The October 1902 Congress in New York was the first meeting held in the United States and the second to take place in the New World. After formal meetings, delegates toured major cities, scientific institutions, and other important sites; among these was Fort Ancient in Ohio.
