Scope and Contents note
Scope and Contents note
Photographs depicting Gay Head Indians including portraits as well as images of people at Martha's Vineyard Beach, in boats, near their homes, and on or around trains. Many of the copies were made from case photographs. The collection also includes photocopies of the original photographs with identifications by Gale Huntington, a lifetime resident of Martha's Vineyard.
Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
The Gay Head Indians resided in the Martha's Vineyard region as early as 1642. The tribe continues to remain relatively isolated and maintains strong tribal identity, partly due to its reservation location on the extreme western peninsular point of the Vineyard and strict tribal membership laws.
