Smith and his aeronautical career, specifically his all-metal monoplanes, the Smith (John W. ) 1911 and 1913 monoplanes, and aircraft engine designs, circa 1910-1950s. Renowned aeronautical engineer John William (J. W.) Smith (1871- ) built his first all-metal monoplane in 1911 and developed a radial engine for the British Admiralty in 1915. He conducted research for William S. Stout and designed an automobile for his own air-cooled engine. His later work involved designs for turbojet engines.
