This collection consists of ninety-six videotapes relating to the The Flying Machines' production. Besides the finished project, this collection consists of the project's source material including footage of the restoration facility, footage of aircraft being restored, and interviews with Cole Palen and the NASM staff, including: Robert Mikesh, John Shot, Karl Schneide, Karl Heinzel, George Genotti, Richard Horrigan, Bob Paget, and Lin Ezell. The documentary also includes vintage film clips of aviation from NASM's Film Archives, as well as shots of artifacts in the Museum's collection.

The Flying Machines was a Smithsonian produced documentary about the National Air and Space Museum (NASM). The emphasis of the video was on the Paul E. Garber Restoration Facility at Silver Hill, Maryland, with a side trip to Cole Palen's Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome near Old Rhinebeck, New York.
