Although nominally a member of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary since 1882, in 1915 Italy entered World War I on the side of the Allied Forces and declared war on Austria-Hungary. Austrian and Italian forces fought high in the mountainous and disputed territory of the South Tyrol and in 1918 Italian forces occupied the region, which they would be awarded postwar under the terms of the Treaty of Saint-Germain.
