Redstone Arsenal was home to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, with John Bruce Medaris as Commanding General, beginning in 1956. Dr. Wernher Magnus Maximilian von Braun and his rocket team were already working at Redstone Arsenal (since 1950) as part of the Paperclip Project (Operation Paperclip). Redstone Arsenal boasted over 1,600 highly trained and technologically up-to-date personnel, many of whom held advanced degrees. The Redstone Missile, Jupiter Missile, Nike-Zeus Surface-to-Air Missile, and the Pershing Missile were all developed at Redstone Arsenal, as well and the United States' first satellite, Explorer 1 (RTV 8 and 9).
