Gardiner H. Fiske enlisted as a flying cadet in Boston on April 30, 1917, and had training at Chandler Field, Pennsylvania, before serving at Issoudon and Clermont-Ferrad, France during World War I. Fiske received his commission as 1st Lieutenant with the 20th Aero Squadron on January 27, 1918. One of Lt. Fiske war adventures was when acting as an observer, he was thrown from his cockpit 2000 feet in the air, miraculously landed in front of the vertical stabilizer, and managed to crawl back into the aircraft. Fiske, then a Major, was an Intelligence Officer for the Eighth Air Force during World War II.
