This collection consists of a piece of art work created by the donor which commemorates Joan Merriam Smith's around the world flight. The piece includes text at the top edge about a proposed air mail stamp in honor of Smith and more text at the bottom edge that provides biographical information on Smith. The body of the piece is made of a drawing of the Piper Apache

Joan Merriam Smith completed an around the world flight, beginning in Oakland California on March 17, 1964, that closely followed the route of Amelia Earhart's ill-fated around the world flight attempt in 1937. Smith, flying the Piper Apache
City of Long Beach
(A/C No. N3251P), successfully completed the 27,750 mile flight in 56 days, arriving back in Oakland on May 12, 1964. Smith was posthumously awarded the Harmon Trophy in 1965 (she died at age 28 in February 1965 from injuries sustained in a plane crash).
