Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
This subject category- Missions-consists of materials from mission groups. There are materials printed concerning the missions themselves as well as materials on some of their causes supported. The materials are spread out through them time period given without a particular time emphasis. Most of the missions are from the state of New York with several other states and countries represented as well. Researchers looking for materials on various missions or on a few of the causes they supported during the 19th and early 20th centuries will find this information useful.
Missions contains ad cards, bulletins, pamphlets and booklets of information, agendas and programs of meetings, receipts for contributions, and requests for contributions. There are also annual reports of several groups. There is not a particular time period within the dates given above that most of the materials represent. The vast majority of the missions are found in New York. Other states included are Massachusetts, West Virginia, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Illinois, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. There is one mission that appears to be located in London, England. Materials are arranged alphabetically by mission.
Related Information includes an image of a missionary, several foreign items, and some miscellaneous materials. Foreign items are in English (Great Britain), French, German, and Chinese. The German item is dated 1921. There is also a "Grande-Ligne Mission Register" from 1854 written in English but from an unknown country. The remaining foreign items are undated. The miscellaneous folder includes ad cards for a benefit concert (1864), an 1878 notice of the printing of the "Monthly Missionary Magazine", an 1879 state mission board appointment notice, undated information pamphlets, 1861 New York state legislative papers, an undated missionary prayer, and an 1888 copy of "The Mission Leaflet". Materials are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Administration

Author
Vanessa Broussard-Simmons and Nicole Blechynden
Sponsor
Funding for partial processing of the collection was supported by a grant from the Smithsonian Institution's Collections Care and Preservation Fund (CCPF).
Immediate Source of Acquisition note
Missions is a portion of the Business Ephemera Series of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Accession AC0060 purchased from Isadore Warshaw in 1967. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.
Processing Information
In 2016, with funding provided by the Smithsonian Institution's Collections Care and Preservation Fund, the Archives Center at the National Museum of American History implemented the use of minimal level processing standards to increase information about and facilitate access to more of our collections. A large portion of stored material from the original acquisition received minimal level processing, which resulted in additions to this Subject category. This effort included basic arrangement and replacement of non-archival housing for long-term stability, but staples and other fasteners have not all been removed. Revisions to the encoded finding aid were made to reflect the added content in context to the previously processed material.
Minimal level processing and enhancement of the machine-readable finding aid completed by Nicole Blechynden, September 2017.
